Foundationless frames give bees a blank slate — instead of pressed foundation, they build their own comb from scratch, guided by a wooden starter strip along the top bar. Each frame includes a top bar, bottom bar, two sidebars, and that starter strip, which keeps the bees building straight instead of wandering across the frame.
Key Features
- Full-length starter strip guides bees to build straight comb, reducing crooked or crosscombed frames
- Solid bottom bar — an upgrade from older designs, this cuts down on hiding spots for small hive beetles
- Bees build cells in a natural range of sizes, from 4.7mm to 5.6mm, based on their own needs rather than a fixed foundation size
- Well suited for comb honey or chunk honey, since the comb can be cut through cleanly with no foundation inside
- Available unassembled or assembled — unassembled frames go together with a hammer, nails, and wood glue
Why Choose Foundationless
Skipping foundation lets bees build comb their own way, at natural cell sizes suited to their needs. It's a common choice for beekeepers harvesting comb or chunk honey, since there's no foundation sheet to cut around — just pure comb and honey.
